OPENPTO / PARTNERSHIP
Extend your client services with a well-handled introduction.
For firms with trusted client relationships and a need for specialist support.
Accounting and tax firms
Brand and intellectual property needs can arise when a client establishes a company, changes its operating entity, expands a business or enters a new market. You provide the business context; we help clarify the specialist work required.
Business service firms and commercial advisers
Company formation, market entry and ongoing business support can lead to trademark filing and maintenance needs. A clear introduction helps the client find a practical next step.
Other professional referral partners
Firms with established client relationships can also discuss execution support for trademark, patent or design matters. Scope, information boundaries and any remuneration arrangements are confirmed individually.
The relationship is built around genuine client needs and appropriate professional support. Partners are not expected to guarantee outcomes or make specialist assessments.
Each party focuses on its own role.
Introducing a requirement and accepting an engagement are separate steps. The client retains the decision on whether to proceed.
| Activity | Referral partner | OpenPTO | Client |
|---|---|---|---|
| Identifying the need | Understands the business context and target markets | Helps identify the further information required | Explains business objectives and requirements |
| Permission to contact | Obtains permission for the introduction and necessary information sharing | Communicates within the agreed scope | Decides whether to accept contact and what may be shared |
| Scope and quotation | Provides authorised context without replacing specialist assessment | Identifies scope, responsible parties, materials and fees | Reviews the proposal and decides whether to engage |
| Professional delivery | Assists with coordination where appropriate | Progresses the agreed work | Provides and confirms necessary information |
| Progress updates | Receives permitted, necessary summaries | Shares suitable updates and next steps as agreed | Determines the relevant information-sharing scope |
| Partner remuneration | Reconciles eligible matters and remuneration under the terms | Explains eligible fees, calculation and settlement | Pays applicable fees under the engagement arrangements |
Discuss the partnership first. Then arrange the client handoff.
Step 1: Introduce your firm
Email your firm name, service type, location, typical clients and target jurisdictions. You can discuss likely future needs even if you do not have a current matter.
Step 2: Confirm the working arrangement
Agree on available services, contacts, information sharing and any applicable remuneration and settlement arrangements. Please flag relevant professional obligations or internal policies at your firm.
Step 3: Introduce with the client's permission
Once the client agrees to be contacted, use the agreed handoff method to share their name, necessary contact details, target markets and a short description of the requirement. The material shared should stay within the client's permission.
Step 4: Let the client confirm the quotation and engagement
OpenPTO discusses the matter further with the client and provides a quotation. Work is arranged after the client confirms the service and engagement, with subsequent updates shared with the partner as permitted.
Your first email can simply introduce your firm. There is no need to prepare a complete client file at this stage.
Clear boundaries make a client introduction easier.
Contact stays within the agreed matter. Client communication and services focus on matters confirmed with the relevant parties in advance. New services or wider contact are discussed separately; one introduction is not treated as general marketing permission.
Only permitted information is shared. Partner updates are limited by client permission and the working arrangement. A referral does not automatically open application materials, professional analysis, internal notes or other client records.
Responsibility is identified for each matter. Relevant entities, professionals and service scope are explained before engagement. A six-jurisdiction network does not mean the same individual holds the same qualifications in every jurisdiction.
The client retains the decision. The client decides whether to engage or accept additional work. Partners do not need to accept a quotation or make professional decisions on the client's behalf.
The client gets professional support. You know how to help with the next step.
Quotation: scope and fees are explained
The proposal sets out the services, professional fees, official fees and any other applicable costs, together with the information required. New instructions or exceptional procedures outside that scope are addressed separately.
Delivery: the current task and next step are clear
Subject to the client's permission and the agreed arrangement, we provide suitable summaries—for example, the information being checked, whose input is needed and what comes next. The communication method is agreed at the outset.
Reconciliation: the remuneration has a stated basis
Eligible fees, the applicable rate, adjustments and settlement are explained separately. Example amounts illustrate the calculation; they are not records of payments received.
Illustrative update:
| Field | Illustration |
|---|---|
| Matter | Preparing trademark application information |
| Current task | Checking the applicant and goods/services list |
| Client input | Confirming the materials authorised for use |
| Partner information | Necessary summary shared with the client's permission |
| Next step | Confirming the next action when the information is complete |
This is a communication-format illustration, not a real client record or filing status.
10% of eligible professional fees. A clear basis, agreed in advance.
For applicable arrangements, remuneration is calculated as eligible professional fees actually received and allocated to the matter × 10%. Official fees, taxes and disbursements are excluded. A quotation, an unpaid amount or fees that do not meet the agreed eligibility criteria are not automatically included in the calculation.
Calculation illustration
| Item | Amount or rate | Included in the basis? |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible professional fees received | USD 1,000 | Yes |
| Separately itemised official fees | USD 300 | No |
| Partner rate | 10% | Subject to the applicable terms |
| Illustrative remuneration | USD 100 | USD 1,000 × 10% |
If a refund, correction or reallocation occurs, remuneration is reconciled under the agreed terms. Confirming the calculation and making a settlement are separate steps. Settlement method, timing, required documents and eligible matters are agreed in writing at the start of the relationship.
This is a calculation illustration, not an actual transaction, earnings forecast or promise of automatic payment. Participation and remuneration are subject to written agreement, applicable requirements and arrangements acceptable to your firm. If referral remuneration is unsuitable for your practice, you can discuss a service collaboration without it.

1. Do I need to register or log in first?
No. Email us to discuss a partnership. The method for introducing a specific client is agreed once the working arrangement is clear.
2. Do I need trademark, patent or jurisdiction-specific expertise?
You do not need to choose a professional strategy or assess likely success. Explain the business background, target markets and issue the client wants to address. Relevant professionals then clarify the requirements and available service scope.
3. Can we discuss cooperation without a current matter?
Yes. Your firm profile, typical clients and likely needs help both sides identify a suitable arrangement. Each specific matter is still considered individually.
4. Who contacts the client, provides the quotation and enters the engagement?
With the client's permission, OpenPTO discusses requirements and fees and identifies the responsible entities and engagement arrangements. The client decides whether to accept the quotation and engagement; the referral partner does not need to decide for them.
5. Will the partner receive the complete client file?
Not automatically. Information shared with a partner is limited by the client's permission and the agreed arrangement. Complete documents, professional analysis and internal notes are not automatically included.
6. Will OpenPTO market other services to the referred client?
A referral is not treated as general marketing permission. Contact focuses on the agreed matter; additional services or a wider scope of contact require appropriate separate consent.
7. Is the 10% based on the total quotation, payments received or official fees as well?
The applicable basis is eligible professional fees actually received and allocated to the matter. Official fees, taxes and disbursements are excluded, and unpaid quoted amounts are not automatically included. Eligibility and settlement follow the partnership terms.
8. What happens if a client receives a refund or the fees are corrected?
Remuneration is reconciled against the actual refund, correction or fee reallocation and the terms agreed in advance. The website illustration does not predetermine a refund outcome or settlement timetable.
9. What if the client needs a jurisdiction outside the six listed?
Tell us the target market and requirement. We will confirm whether suitable professional support can be arranged before setting out scope and fees. We do not assume that every market or matter can be covered.
10. What should the first email contain?
Include your firm name, service type, location, typical client needs and jurisdictions of interest. If a matter already exists, you can initially describe it without sensitive client details. Necessary information can follow after permission and the handoff method are confirmed.
Tell us how you want to support your clients.
An email introducing your firm and requirements is enough to start the discussion. We can clarify available services, client handoffs and partner remuneration together.
